Invasive Curlyleaf Pondweed (CLP)
Grove Lake is home to 114 lakeshore owners, a public boat access, a DNR access, and a variety native plants and animals. What doesn’t belong? Curly leaf Pondweed and other non-native organisms that threaten the overall health and enjoyment of our lake. Even more alarming, no current plan or funds exists to combat these known invaders.
What is CLP?
- A rooted, submerged aquatic plant that branches out from a main stem with “lasagna-like” leaves.
- Creates a dense matt on the water’s surface that inhibits water recreationists
- Overtakes habitat for other native aquatic plants and animals
- Die off midsummer and litters shorelines with dead plants
What can we do? (Well, it's a process.)
-
Step 1: Lake Vegetation Assessment (Performed Summer 2023!)
Similar to 2016, a specialized team collects samples of plants on Grove Lake in both the spring and the fall to determine plant concentrations. This includes both native and nonnative plants such as CLP and cattails. The 2016 Assessment is too outdated to secure funding or develop a Lake Plan; though, it’s a VERY important part of plotting vegetation growth and trajectory.
-
Step 2: Lake Resident Survey (Coming out Fall 2023)
Once plant data has been conveyed, an online survey will open for every resident to voice concerns and opinions about the corrective action desired on Grove Lake. This ensures proposed actions are agreed upon by the majority of lakeshore owners.
-
Step 3: Lake Assessment and Plan
This combines data from the Survey, Vegetation Assessment, and all water quality monitoring done by other agencies (DNR, NFCR Watershed, etc.) to create a comprehensive plan for managing the lake. This can include but is not limited to treatment for CLP, AIS prevention, watercraft route maintenance, and many other activities.

What We Ask of You?
Donations are needed to help complete this plan. With an estimated total of $10,000, we can combat the spread of CLP and perform other initiatives to strive for a healthy, accessible lake. A specific account
(separate from membership dues) has been opened for the Lake Management Plan.
If every lake owner donated $100 or more, we can reach our goal! Please consider donating to this cause! Your donation is tax deductible.
